Ascent of the highest church tower in Slovakia
The tower is the most notable and the most distinctive part of the silhouette of the town Spišská Nová Ves. The tower of the Roman-Catholic vicarage church of the Virgin Mary’s Assumption originating from the 13th century is one of the town’s greatest attractions because of its height of 87 metres. It is built on original medieval walls. A curiosity is seven big clock faces run by a single clockwork. The latter also operates all the bells – „The Death bell“ from 1486, Peter and Paul from 1930 and Urban and Joseph from 1857. The clock is a relic from the original Gothic tower that was rebuilt in 1649 and given an onion-domed tip. Ascents of the tower are organized by Tourist Information Centre – contact hereabove.
